We’ve always wanted to establish an learning program having been trainees ourselves and led volunteer programs in the past. We see a high demand for development after study, as young artists and curators often reach out to us. With the support of CBK Rotterdam, we have decided to offer a 6-month traineeship under our guidance.
We offer an emerging Rotterdam based artist an understanding of the practical aspects of bringing art to the public through both artmaking and curating. We believe this is the most sustainable and relevant program for our small organisation. It allows us to offer a substantial project and provide opportunities to a young arts practitioner who might not otherwise get a foot in the door.
The trainee will be paid a monthly fee and will learn how to research, curate as an artist, be materially led, empathise with process, and curate from that process. Other practical modes of learning include how to interview artists, write artist biographies and project statements, develop and maintain budgets, install and set up exhibitions and events, interact with the audience, maintain guest lists, set up seating, and write notices. The traineeship will result in an exhibition or event series conceived, developed, and executed by the trainee with our support.
Expectations of the trainee include a willingness to learn, an interest in the artist’s role as curator, active engagement in making and reflecting, and the ability to develop and articulate ideas while embracing the studio’s creative process. Requirements for applicants include a strong interest in art and curating, the capacity to think beyond conventional categories, a willingness to push ideas to their limits, and a meticulous work ethic.
