On The Waves With... invites people to share the music they listen to while working, making, reading, thinking, writing, cleaning, or moving that is influential to their practice. Then contributors pass the invitation to another person to make a playlist thereby expanding the aural, and joyously unrestrained, beyond our community and into new possibilities.
Natalia Sorzano (b.1984) graduated with degrees in law and fine art and worked in the field of LGBTIQ human rights for the Colombian Government from 2010 to 2014. In 2016, she finished her MFA degree in fine art at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, where she is now based. She was co-founder of the queer community space Tender Center in Rotterdam and is part of the facilitative platform GHOST. Natalia stages and transforms conversations and encounters into mixed media installations (sculpture and painting), music, and performative films. Her work explores practices of relation, identity and belief by channeling multiple voices and narratives to juxtapose mysticism, politics, oral histories and theory. Natalia Sorzano: The playlist has the following genres of music: Cumbia, Fandango, porro, cumbia vallenata, vallenato, merecumbé, charanga, gaita, bullerengue, currulao, bundé chocoano, and mapalé. Some of these genres mix indigenous and african sounds, others are mostly african influenced like bullerengue, which comes from places like Palenque, the first free town in the Americas. One can also sense the influence or direct connection to cumbia. I made some small interventions/transitions in between songs and I speak and sing in some parts. 1. Los Guacheros, Baila Rosita 2.
